Mental Health Issues
What are child & teen Issues
Younger people can experience many of the same mental health issues as adults. However, growing up also brings its own set of challenges that are unique to children and teenagers.
These can include physical developments such as puberty, adolescence and sexuality, as well as other issues like identity, peer pressure, bullying, social media addiction and substance use.
As well as this, young people can often be deeply affected by what is going on at home. Experiences like divorce, adoption, the death of a parent, blended families and abandonment can all have an impact. This is because a child’s relationship with their caregivers is crucial in helping them to feel safe, develop a sense of identity and manage emotions. In fact, a young person’s early experiences of attachment can sometimes have a huge impact on their relationships in adulthood.
Also, as younger people are still developing, they often aren’t fully equipped to cope with stress, shock or sudden change. Added to this, if they have a condition such as ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), then they might find it harder to manage difficult feelings or situations.
Thankfully, the right therapy can help children and teenagers to make better sense of their world. A therapist can help them to sort through their emotions, put their experiences into words and find ways to cope with challenges. As a result, the young person will be equipped with healthy tools for navigating life and relationships into adulthood.
