Mental Health Issues
What are relationship issues?
Whether it is with a partner, family member or friend, relationships can enrich our lives. They can be a source of joy and companionship, as well as offering stability, support and love.
However, all relationships go through challenges from time to time. In fact, the roots of this often lie in each individual’s early experiences with caregivers, which can create attachment issues in adulthood. This is because our past experiences can affect the future roles we take in relationships, the kind of partners we choose, and our ability to communicate needs and boundaries.
For instance, if a child is abandoned, neglected, abused or even smothered by a parent, this can have a real impact on how they relate to others in adulthood. As a result, they might find themselves in relationships with partners who are unavailable, controlling, narcissistic, abusive or invalidating.
Relatively strong and stable relationships can also face challenges, such as differences in communication styles, infidelity, sexual issues, money worries and traumas like the loss of a child. Sometimes people also need support in coping with relatives, friends or colleagues, or when caring for a family member who is ageing or has additional needs.
Whatever relationship issue you are experiencing, the right therapy can help you find a way forward. This can include support for individuals, couples or families.
